Argon Laser
Retinal Laser photocoagulations treatment can be used to treat a number of eye conditions including diabetic eye disease, glaucoma and some retinal holes and tears. It can be also used to prevent an eye condition from getting worse and sometimes to cure it.
The laser machine is atached to a slit-lamp microscope, similar to that used when your eyes are being examined in the clinic. This is an outpatient treatment carried out by an ophthalmologist. Argon laser is green light focused to cause a microscopic burn. The size of the burn is usualy of the order of a 5th of a mm in size. The aim of the burn is to kill sick tissue to prevent complications resulting from persistent sick tissue.
Alternatively the laser treatment may be used for causing an adhesion between the retina and underlying structures of the eye, (spot weld), e.g. laser burns applied around a retinal hole or retinal tear.
The whole treatment is often done in more than one treatment session. the other eye may require treatment. Further treatment in the distant future are also sometimes required, particularly in diabetic patients.
